Les bact\u00e9ries \u00e0 Gram n\u00e9gatif se d\u00e9veloppent sur le milieu et se diff\u00e9rencient par leur capacit\u00e9 \u00e0 fermenter le lactose. Les souches fermentant le lactose se d\u00e9veloppent sous forme de colonies rouges ou roses souvent entour\u00e9es d&rsquo;une zone de bile pr\u00e9cipit\u00e9e acide. La couleur rouge est due \u00e0 la production d&rsquo;acide \u00e0 partir du lactose, \u00e0 l&rsquo;absorption du rouge neutre et \u00e0 un changement de couleur ult\u00e9rieur du colorant lorsque le pH du milieu tombe en dessous de 6,8.
